The Desert Exile
Synopsis: The characters piece together that the staff of the motel are previous guests, forever bound to prevent new arrivals from leaving.
Ellie, Josh, and Judy had been driving for hours, the desolate highway stretching before them like an endless ribbon through the arid desert. Dust plumes trailed behind their beat-up Volkswagen van as they drove deeper into the barren landscape of 1967. The sun was beginning to set, casting long shadows and a golden shimmer over the horizon when they spotted a flickering neon sign in the distance.
"Am Motel," Josh read aloud, his rational mind recognizing it as their possible salvation for the night.
Ellie, the free-spirited hippie, nodded in agreement. "Let's check it out. I'm getting weary," she said with a yawn.
Judy, always calm and collected, took a drag from her cannabis cigarette, exhaling slowly. "Sounds like a plan."
They pulled into the gravel lot, the crunching of rocks beneath the tires breaking the eerie silence of the desert evening. A chilling breeze greeted them as they approached the reception.
The dull bell above the door chimed as they entered, announcing their arrival. The interior of the motel was dated but clean, an odd combination of pastel colors and worn carpets.
A tall, gaunt man with hollow eyes stood at the reception desk. He greeted them with a forced smile. "Welcome to Am Motel. How can I assist you?"
Josh approached the counter and requested a room for the night.
"Certainly," the man replied, handing over a vintage key. "Room twelve. Enjoy your stay."
As they walked to their room, Ellie glanced around, taking in the peculiar atmosphere. Something felt off, but she couldn't quite place it. Judy, on the other hand, seemed unconcerned as they settled in, lighting another joint to relieve the day’s stress.
The night descended quickly in the desert. Ellie and Judy shared a double bed while Josh claimed the couch, the room's old-fashioned lamps casting a dim, comforting glow.
Sometime past midnight, Ellie was roused from her slumber by a series of faint whispers. She cautiously peeked through the thin curtains of their room, just in time to see one of the staff members standing motionless outside.
Puzzled and unnerved, she whispered to herself, "What is going on here?"
The next morning, Ellie told Josh and Judy about her strange encounter. Josh brushed it off as paranoia from exhaustion, while Judy just shrugged, attributing it to one of her trips.
The trio decided to leave early the next morning. They packed quickly, eager to get back on the open road and away from the eerie motel.
But when they tried the door, it wouldn't budge. Josh jiggled the knob and even tried using a key, but it was no use. They were locked in.
"This can't be happening," Josh muttered, his rational mind struggling to comprehend.
Ellie felt a growing dread in the pit of her stomach. "What if this place doesn't want us to leave?"
Judy, attempting to keep her calm demeanor, took a deep breath. "Let's find another way out."
They split up to find another exit. Josh headed towards the back door, while Ellie and Judy explored the corridors. Everywhere they turned, they encountered locked doors and barred windows.
Josh finally found a fire escape but, to his horror, invisible forces thrust him backward each time he tried to step through. Something supernatural was at play.
Ellie felt a chill, sensing that the very walls were watching them. "We have to find out what’s going on," she said urgently.
Judy, frightened for the first time, nodded in agreement. "There's definitely something up with this place."
Returning to the lobby, they were met by the same gaunt man who had checked them in. His demeanor had shifted to something colder, more sinister.
"You can't leave," he stated flatly. "You are bound to this place now."
Josh, exasperated, demanded an explanation. The man’s voice dropped to a whisper. "The staff at this motel...we were all previous guests once. We were trapped here, just as you are now. Our role is to ensure no one escapes."
Horror washed over the trio. Ellie’s worst fears were confirmed. "We need to find a way out, now!" she cried.
Days turned into a blur as each escape attempt was thwarted by the malevolent forces of the motel. Food and water were inexplicably provided, ensuring their survival but not their freedom.
Ellie began to lose touch with reality, the walls seemed to close in on her. Judy resorted to smoking more to calm her nerves, retreating further into her own distorted world.
Josh remained the most grounded but even his rational mind started to fray. The isolation and oppressive atmosphere were driving them all to the brink of insanity.
In a desperate final attempt, Josh tried to rally Ellie and Judy to make one last push for freedom. But it was too late; the motel had already claimed them. Ellie and Judy had succumbed to the madness, their eyes empty and minds shattered.
Josh knew he had to leave them behind. With a heavy heart, he slipped out during the early hours, breaking through the invisible barriers with sheer willpower.
As he stumbled into the desert, the horrors of the motel still echoed in his mind. He wandered aimlessly, now a shadow of his former self, the vast expanse of the desert his only companion.
Josh wandered through the barren wasteland, sanity slipping further with each step. The endless desert mirrored his desolate inner world. He glanced back once, seeing the distant silhouette of the Am Motel, a place that would forever haunt his dreams.
In his delirium, he muttered to himself, "I escaped, but at what cost?"
The desert swallowed his words, carrying them into oblivion as Josh continued his aimless journey, forever lost in the expanse of both sand and his own fractured mind.
